ReplyDeleteLooks like a terrific Thanksgiving day!! Thank you for all of your hard work in helping these missionaries feel at home and loved. I'm so glad there were a lot of helpers. It looked like quite a feat. We are thankful for you! Elder Brown's family
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful celebration. Looks like there was lots of love and joy present. The five future Suriname missionaries spent their day at the MTC packaging food for the hungry, with a devotional from President Uchtdorf, watching "The Other Side of Heaven" and with a special musical performance. Also, my son, Elder Newton, wrote home that he got to meet Sister Collins. It appears that she served with the Suriname missionaries for awhile. This is what my son wrote:
ReplyDeleteYesterday I also happened to meet a missionary from Suriname. The ONLY missionary from Suriname. She speaks fluent English and Dutch and is learning French to go to Paris. We asked her what advice she had and she told us three things.
1. Blend in
2. Be friends with everyone, especially the members
3. Do not use gutterals, or other certain sounds
A gutteral is this thing in Dutch where G makes a throaty H sound and CH makes a sound like going off a slide into gravel. It is hard to explain. The W makes more of a V+W sound, and F makes a V+F sound. Our teachers are all return missionaries from the Netherlands so they taught us Netherlands Dutch. Come to find out, they do not speak at all like this in Suriname. The people thinks it is weird when missionaries do it. The Sister from Suriname (Sister Collins) said that she has no idea why they teach us that. So I am relearning about 1/3 of my Dutch vocabulary. But its kinda nice. Gutterals were a difficult part of the language and without them it sounds much more like English. Suriname took Dutch and made it better. It was really cool to meet someone from where we are going. She also said that Elders bike all over the country. Gonna be a party.
(Just thought I'd pass this along, FYI)
Elder and Sister Vermeeren, I can't thank you enough for all you do for our missionaries! Elder Andrews is reaching the end of his mission soon, and we are so excited to welcome him home. But the love, encouragement, and support you have given to him and all the missionaries has meant the world to him - and to us! You two are angels!!
